GRUMP

Nobody likes a GRUMP. But, I would like to suggest that when it comes to reading the Bible, a GRUMP may not be so bad. What on Earth is he talking about? you may be wondering. Let me explain.

GRUMP is a way of helping you study the Bible. It is an acronym- each letter stands for a way in which we ought to approach the Bible. When employed, you will find yourself growing in ways that you never thought possible.

Give ear. What this means is to listen. Listen to what other godly people say about the Bible. Paul pointed this out in Romans 10:17.

Faith comes form hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

This is why it is important to go to church and listen to Biblical preaching and teaching. It is also helpful to get a basic Bible commentary, like Haley’s Bible Handbook.

Read. This means reading the Bible. This practice alone will change your life. John hit on a great principle in the book of Revelation chapter one, verse three.

Blessed is he who reads and those who hear
the words of this prophecy, and keep
those things which are written in it.

Understand. This takes study. After hearing and reading, it is important that one understands what is being said. The people of Berea knew the importance of this. We see their approach to scripture in Acts 17:11.

They received the word with all
readiness, and searched the Scriptures
daily to find out whether these things were so.

Memorize. Hiding God’s word in your heart is critical to your further growth. David said as much in Psalm 119:11.

Your word I have hidden in my heart,
that I might not sin against Thee.

Ponder. Holding all the other helpful approaches together is the practice of pondering, or meditating. When you add this to the Hearing, Reading, Understanding, and Memorizing you end up with a potent combination. The very first Psalm describes a man who is very blessed. And one of the things that brings blessings in his life is this very point. In verse two of Psalm one we read,

But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.

So there you have it, GRUMP. It can be your friend in your walk with God
